US-based writer and curator Dr Judith Stein presents her recent publication, Eye of the
Sixties, Richard Bellamy and the Transformation of Modern Art, the first biography of
one of the twentieth century’s most influential and enigmatic art dealers, Dick Bellamy.
At the Green Gallery on Fifty-Seventh Street, NY, Bellamy launched the careers of
today’s iconic Pop, Op and conceptual artists, mavericks and minimalists, including
Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono, Claes Oldenburg and James Rosenquist, Donald Judd
and Dan Flavin, Mark di Suvero and George Segal.
Bellamy was a beatnik with a legendary eye, an arbiter of the counterculture
movement, operating at the very beginnings of the market for contemporary art.
Published in July 2016, Eye of the Sixties is the result of two decades of research and
hundreds of interviews with Bellamy’s artists, friends, colleagues and lovers in order to
recover the history of this elusive art dealer.
Dr Stein comes to Australia after an extensive US tour.
